So, it's the
end of the season. Erie and Cheyenne are over. The car sits in the
garage. It just didn't feel right -- a great season, so why should
it be over?
Evidently,
the #25's people were sitting around at dinner on a Thursday night
after the Erie and Cheyenne season and thought - what the heck - lets
go to Salt Lake City for their last race on Saturday night. Got home,
unloaded the car, got it set up, left for SLC Friday at about 4:00
pm.
Qualified
11th (out of 17). Car was terrible - just haven't been able to get
the set-up right for that track. Started 4th in the heat race - finished
4th. Made some more changes before the a-main. Started 7th, dropped
to 14th, came up to 5th, dropped to 12th, etc., etc. etc.
BUT, the car
really came around, finally got through a bunch of traffic, was running
5th, then 4th then 3rd when the white flag came out. Coming out of
turn 4 on the last lap to take the checkered, the two guys in front
of me wrecked - the car #25 ran into them because it was right behind
them with no place to go. Downshifted twice and gassed her up - CROSSED
THE FINISH LINE 1st !
Now it gets
interesting. They decided to go back to the white flag lap, and award
finishing positions based on that lap. OK - THE #25 IS THIRD . . .
Not so fast -- Three and one-half hours later, they disqualified the
2nd place guy (David Johnson) for causing the wreck. OK - now THE
#25 IS SECOND! . . . Not so fast.= -- Now they DQ the 1st place guy
because after the wreck, he got out of his car and threw his steering
wheel at David. NOW #25 IS 1ST!
Car is wrecked
- went to Victory lane on the jack. GOT 1ST, TROPHY, JACKET AND 1ST
PLACE MONEY . . . the end (of the 2003 season - finally!)
